What The Brain Is Best At Doing Is Figuring Things Out
Nov 13, 2024When the brain gets bored, it starts devouring its memories to entertain itself.
I recently shared about how I started taking tennis lessons after more than twelve years of absence. Back then, I started the lessons to keep myself fit and maintain my emotional well-being. At the beginning, I enjoyed the lessons a lot because I was improving rapidly, but after several months, my progress became stagnant. Despite my attempts to push myself harder, I felt stuck, and after a year, I lost interest and quit.
However, now, twelve years older, I have started taking lessons again. It was a painful start since my muscles and joints hurt, but I have been making steady progress. Do you know why? Because this time, I set a goal for myself. I told my coach how well I want to play and under what circumstances. He loved my ambition and is 100% committed to helping me achieve it. And as I get closer to my current goal, I will set an even higher, more challenging goal for myself to keep the momentum going.
The difference between now and twelve years ago is the level of goal I set for myself. Back then, my goal was simply to stay fit, but now, it is to be able to play games with others.
Our brains are good at figuring things out, and they thrive on stimulation. If we don't challenge our brains, they get bored and start to indulge in their memories, projecting old dramas onto the future and imagining fear-driven scenarios. Don't let your brilliant brain get bored; keep feeding it with challenges, intellectual stimulation, creativity, uplifting stories, inspiration, words of encouragement, and gratitude.
Remember, the only people who can realize how much they are capable of are the ones who keep challenging themselves and moving forward.
